As we reflect on the 250th birthday of our country, I have heard many people speak with gratitude about the leaders who helped shape and guide our nation through the years. Their reflections have led me to think about the leaders who have faithfully shaped and guided the life of Fountain City Presbyterian Church. Who are the people in the church God has placed along your path to influence, encourage, and mentor you? How have they helped you land in a broad place?

When I look back on my own life and the family of faith where I grew up, one of the people I remember with deep gratitude is someone I called “Aunt Fran.” She wasn’t a blood relative, but she was very much part of “my village.” She taught the children and made the Bible stories come alive. Even more, through her words, her actions, and her faithful presence, she taught me about God’s love. She taught me perseverance as she struggled with serious health concerns and heartbreaking challenges for much of her adult life. She taught me to love my neighbor and to love God by showing love to everyone she met. She also taught me that I was accountable for extending love and forgiveness to others, just as she loved and forgave us—and as we grew older, she made sure we acted like the Christians we professed to be. She could look at you, and you understood immediately that our actions spoke volumes. I can still feel that look. Again and again, those lessons helped me land in a broad place, because she helped me see God’s love, mercy, and compassion more clearly. I was deeply honored to officiate at her memorial service when she passed away well into her 90s. She was certainly a leader in that church, and I give thanks to God for her life and witness.

Who are the people who have influenced you and FCPC? What did you learn from them? Who are you influencing and mentoring now? I thank God for the ways you and FCPC help others land in a broad place. Today, may we pause with grateful hearts and give thanks to God for the faithful stepping stones along our journeys of faith.
