Under the Palms

By The Rev. Susan Balfour

Beloved,

Grace, mercy, and peace to you, from God and Christ! I give thanks for you always, holding you in prayer.

Sixteenth century theologian John Calvin claimed that God is self-evident, revealed not only in Scripture and the person of Jesus Christ, but also in nature. Were he alive today, I believe Calvin would marvel at modern science and the ever-unfolding ways in which we discover more about the intricacies of creation, and would indeed name science a revelation of God.

As the season changes and chlorophyll drains from green leaves, revealing vivid reds, oranges, and yellows, take a moment to marvel at it all. The tilt of the planet bringing our hemisphere further away from the sun than in the southern hemisphere; the shortening of days; the chill of nights inviting us in to cozy up with loved ones. This weekend, go for a walk in the woods or mountains and give thanks for this special divine revelation, marveling, as Calvin did, at the wonders God has spoken into being.

Be blessed by blessing others.
